The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has initiated procedures to eliminate the automatic renewal of services contracted through the Internet, such as music services, VOD or video game platforms.
The Ministry has announced that this measure will be included in the new Consumer Service Law, which is currently being processed. The purpose of this measure is that in those subscriptions contracted for a free period and which are automatically renewed at the end of that period or those subscriptions that are renewed annually, among other cases, the platform must notify users fifteen days in advance of the expiry of the period so that users can communicate that they do not want to renew the service, as well as being informed of the expiry of the term and the consequences in the event that they do not communicate the cancellation of the renewal.
The aim is to prevent users’ forgetfulness from resulting in payment for the automatic renewal of the service, thus encouraging the conscious consumption of the contracted services.
It will be necessary to wait for its processing and approval to finally know the approved text and, consequently, the scope of the measure.
