⚠️ Beware of Intellectual Property Scams ⚠️

By May 23, 2025April 23rd, 2026No Comments

🛡️ EUROPOL recently published its 2024 Situation Report titled “Misleading payment request fraud targeting intellectual property right owners”, warning about the growing sophistication of a widespread scam targeting both individuals and companies—specifically, applicants and holders of IP rights such as trademarks, patents, and designs.

🚨 Scammers impersonate official IP offices (like the SPTO, EUIPO, or even WIPO) and send fraudulent payment requests via email or postal mail. These often include fake certificates that appear legitimate.

📩 In recent years, scams have increased due to advancements in technology—particularly AI—and the availability of public databases listing IP applicants and right holders, which criminals exploit to automate and scale their fraud.

💸 Despite ongoing efforts by Europol and official institutions to fight these scams and protect potential victims, it’s estimated that over €26 million have already been generated by these organized criminal networks. Beyond the financial loss, these scams also damage the reputation of legitimate IP authorities.

🔐 If you receive any suspicious communication, the best course of action is to verify its authenticity and consult with your legal counsel.
